This piece is manufactured by Empire Casting House, the same New York partner that makes our gold. Our sterling silver is not Fairmined certified, so we make no Fairmined claim for this metal.

Why our gold costs more

Our licence

The Alliance for Responsible Mining has licensed YFS Designs as a Fairmined brand (licence No. 811, valid to 2 April 2030). The licence covers buying Fairmined certified metal and the claims we make about it.

Who makes it

Empire Casting House in New York City manufactures our jewellery. Fairmined lists them publicly as an authorized supplier — a facility permitted to handle certified metal. Certified gold stops being certified the moment it is melted with uncertified metal, so the facility is the part that decides whether the standard survives.

The difference

Fairmined certifies artisanal and small-scale mining organizations against requirements for legal operation, environmental protection, labour conditions and traceability. Conventional gold carries no such requirement, and usually no way to ask.

The price

Certified gold is bought at no less than 95% of the London Bullion Market Association price, with a premium of USD 4 per gram paid on top — USD 6 for mercury-free Ecological gold. Add small-batch casting and hand finishing, and a made-to-order piece costs more to produce than a mass-run one. The metal is one input among several. We would rather tell you that than pretend a single line item explains a price.

The impact

The premium goes to the certified mining organization, not to a broker, and is directed to community and environmental projects. Audit summaries for each certified mine are published publicly by Fairmined.

Applies to 14K gold: every 14K gold piece is cast to order in Fairmined gold. Our sterling silver is not Fairmined certified.
